Although it is only 60 kilometers from San José, Volcán Turrialba Lodge is a definitely a secluded hideaway.

Our access road is restricted to 4 wheel drive vehicles and we have kept it that way intentionally.

The route is clearly posted for those coming on their own. We also offer transfer services, with a capacity of up to 15 passengers, from San José, Turrialba, Cartago, Guápiles, Siquirres an major nearby towns.

There is so much to do around our lodge that guests should plan to stay for several days. We offer a number of different nature walks to observe the diverse native flora and fauna, excursions to the thermal pools and fumaroles of nearby Irazú Volcano, horseback riding on Turrialba's old lava flows, mountain biking.

Of particular interest is our "Volcán Turrialba Tour", a unique opportunity to descend to the floor of a major volcanic crater. Turrialba is the only volcano in Costa Rica where such a descent is possible. For those wishing an even more challenging outing we can arrange special tours. For example, we offer a 10 hour hike tour from Volcán Turrialba to nearby Guápiles. The trail crosses Braulio Carrillo National Park, a place of unsurpassed beauty.

All of our tours are conducted by experienced local tour guides who are knowledgeable about the beauties and secrets of the area. For our guests' comfort and convenience, we provide complimentary, top quality equipment such as rubber ponchos, boots, binoculars, first aid kit, water bottles and more.

Turrialtico Mountain LodgeTurrialtico Mountain Lodge***

The simple, charming rooms were constructed using wood, giving it a rustic feel with the modern conveniences of a private bathroom and warm shower. Decorated with colorful, locally made bedspreads and artwork by artists in Turrialba. From the balcony, there are incredible views of the landscape, the Valley of Turrialba, the majestic Turrialba Volcano, and the Talamanca Mountain Range.

The rooms are located on the second floor of the building, and resemble the style used in the large, farm houses in the area, that were built around the same time period as the construction of the railroad to the Caribbean, during the last century.

Established in 1968 by the pioneers of tourism in the Valley of Turrialba, Aracelly and Marcial Garcia, which with a futuristic vision opened the restaurant and vantage point in a strategically located hill 780 meters above sea level, 100 kilometers from the exotic Caribbean beaches and 70 kilometers from San José, the capital of Costa Rica.

During its first 20 years TURRIALTICO offered restaurant service, being the specialty of the house Costa Rican foods cooked on a wood log stove, which recently was replaced in pro of the conservation of our forests.

From 1990 and due to the tourism that whitewater rafting, beautiful virgin river banks and crystalline waters of the Reventazon and Pacuare rivers attracted to the Turrialba zone, we felt that it was moment to contribute and to grow and decided to offer lodging services to the thousands of tourists that visit Turrialba. Cerro Alto Lodge is located in Sitio Mata, 10 kilometers away from the downtown of Turrialba, highway to Siquirres. Take the route number 10 toward Siquirres passing by the CATIE and then the bridge over the river Reventazón, following you will find an intersection, where you should continue toward the left, more or less 5 kilometers later you will arrive to the village of Boveda, at this point turn to the right and continue by the road until finding the sign with the name of the hotel. Suite Descriptions
Family Suite: A two-room suite with a queen and twin bed in one room and a queen bed in the second room, comfortably accommodating up to 5 people.
Garden Suite: A spacious suite with a Jacuzzi tub in the bathroom as well as a small sitting room, which opens to a private tropical garden.
Vista de Oro Suite: The piece de resistance is the hotel's Vista de Oro Suite. Reached by a private staircase, the Vista de Oro lives up to its name commanding a breathtaking view of the Cordillera Central mountain range and the Central Valley skyline. Tiles, individually handmade in hues of ocher and sienna covers the walls and are complemented by rich wood paneling. A series of delicate cabinets stretches the entire length of the room and carefully placed lightning illuminates antique treasures.

Deluxe Hotel Room: For those who want to feel the Rain Forest even when they are inside, this is the room for you. This 800 square foot room has an unbelievable garden bathroom designed for the true nature lover. A seven-foot waterfall comes to life as you are soaking in the Jacuzzi tub in the garden. There is also a garden shower and indoor shower. All of this is surrounded by beautiful indoor landscaping and illuminated by a skylight. The room also has a Jacuzzi tub and hammock on the balcony for those picture perfect star gazing nights. A grand gas fireplace to view from the king size canopy bed makes the room complete. Standard Hotel Room: This 650 square foot room has a king size canopy bed viewing a grand gas fireplace. The interior design of the room is only surpassed by the view from the balcony of the La Paz River Valley and the Poás Volcano. The best way to enjoy the view is from the Jacuzzi tub or swaying in the hammock on the balcony. The bathroom has an oversized mosaic tiled tub and elaborate waterfall shower. Monarch Villa : Although it is named after a butterfly, it really should be called our Honeymoon Suite. Since opening, we've had many honeymooners enjoy our villa and we believe caused a few others to propose (including the owner of Waterfall Gardens). The 1,200 square foot villa leaves nothing to be desired. First there are not one, not two, but three fireplaces to set the mood for this wonderland in the Cloud Forest.
The master bedroom alone invokes thoughts of romance with its king size canopy bed set before a gas fireplace. The oversized master bathroom, complete with full Jacuzzi tub, fireplace and waterfall shower will make you wonder why you aren't staying longer. The villa is complete with a luxurious living room, a two-story fireplace and a second floor loft with a queen size bed, a single bed and full bathroom. If that isn't enough there is a kitchenette and dining area with refrigerator, coffee maker and a microwave oven.
But, the villa would not be complete without a view of the La Paz River Valley and the Poás Volcano and how best to enjoy them but from the Jacuzzi tub on the balcony. But don't worry, when you've had enough 'nature' for the day, the villa is well equipped with a stereo system with speakers in every room and satellite TV in both the living area and master bedroom. With the Peace Lodge we endeavored to create the finest quality accommodations in Costa Rica and quite possibly in the world. To do this we put our master craftsmen to work sculpting a uniquely themed environment for your enjoyment.

We combined the use of naturally shaped wood beams and hand laid hardwood flooring along with river stone and slate to render an atmosphere that encompasses the rustic past and natural beauty of the rainforest and Costa Rica.

The park includes 3.5 kilometers of paved trails that showcase 5 magnificent waterfalls and a kilometer of frontage on the La Paz River. Along this path you will find spectacular gardens with information about the plants and their peculiarities.

Our Hummingbird Garden attracts 23 of the 57 species of hummingbirds found in Costa Rica. You will find more species of hummingbirds here and more information about hummingbirds than in any other location in Costa Rica. The birds have become incredibly tame so you can approach within inches and sometimes even touch them. Our educational exhibits describe in detail the behavior and physical characteristics of these amazing creatures.

The Butterfly Observatory is a magnificent enclosure and the largest of its type in the world. In the on-site laboratory you will be fascinated by your close encounter with these insects as they develop through their lifecycle. You will watch butterflies being born from their pupa and you will be able to handle and release them into their first flight.

Accommodations:
The exquisite cottages inspired on Japanese design have all of the amenities of home in very private and beautiful settings. Trails lead through the gardens, plantation and down to our own 300 foot waterfall. Bird watching, hiking, horseback riding, doing laps in our mosaic tiled pool, soaking in the Jacuzzi, or hammock time are just some of the favorite activities here.

Mango Manor cottage (our large duplex): Has two suites and the option of having a shared kitchen. Each suite has 2 beds and a twin futon. One room (the Canyon) has 2 double beds and the twin size futon lounge, the other (The Garden) has a queen, a double bed, and a twin size futon lounge. Each suite can accommodate a total of 5.

The "Exotic Wood Suites" (our mid size duplex suites) overlook the Canyon Preserve. Each suite has a queen size bed and a twin size futon lounge and the option of having a kitchen. These duplex villas are perched on the bluff overlooking our nature preserve canyon. The balconies are ideal for bird and nature observation. Each suite can accommodate a total of 3.

The Tea House cottage (our largest private cottage) Has a queen bed and a double size futon sofa, walk-in closet, and a kitchenette. The veranda with hammock is perfect for lounging and nature watching. This cottage can accommodate a total of 4.

El Nido (a midsize private cottage): This private cottage has a Queen bed, kitchenette, walk-in closet, with a big veranda (with hammock) for bird watching, and an Orchid tree patio where the Iguanas seem to like to play. The Mona Lisa Rancho is a Thatch roofed octagonal suite perched near the edge of the bluff right next to the jungle edge. It has a queen size bed. The outdoor shower is a favorite among guests and has a private sunbathing patio. This cottage can accommodate just 2 people.

The Ilan Ilan is slightly larger Thatch roofed octagonal suite is (ramped for physically challenged guests) perched near the edge of the bluff also next to the jungle edge. It has a queen size bed. Like the Mona Lisa it also has an outdoor shower (for that Tarzan and Jane in you) and a private sunbathing patio.

Dining
We start off the day with breakfast on the patio overlooking the pool and gardens. Breakfast is delightful with fresh hand squeezed orange juice (from our plantation), fresh tropical fruit, Costa Rican Coffee, and our chef's "inspiration" of the morning. Reservations may be made to have an evening meal on our upstairs glass ceiling veranda that overlooks the central valley and the surrounding mountains. Dinners are a treat as our chef creates a Nuevo Cuisine with a "Tico touch".
