Tortuga LodgeTortuga Lodge***

Tortuga Lodges & Gardens starts at our river dock. Sit, relax, enjoy the view. To get the essence of Tortuguero you must tune in with the water, you are immersed in a world where land and water merge and became one.

The Tortuguero National Park is 51,870 acres and one of the last large areas of tropical rain forest in Central America. Monkeys, storks, and river otters can often be seen along the water in addition to more than 300 species of birds.

During the season (June through October) the highlight of your trip to Tortuguero is actually standing a few feet from a 300 pound Green Sea Turtle while she lays 80-100 eggs, covers up her nest, perhaps digs a false nest to throw off predators, and, finally, after more than an hour, returns to the sea. Tortuguero is conservation. In 1962 the late Dr. Archie Carr began to study and tag the thousands of Atlantic green sea turtles that every year from June through October come to Tortuguero Beach to lay their eggs.

Set on the black water canals of Tortuguero, Tortuga Lodge's dinning room and bar feature a shaded verandah; the dining has been called "the best in Costa Rica" by many of our guests. Tortuga Lodge's restaurant starts at the river dock and reluctantly moves inland.

Tortuga Lodge's main reason for existence is to provide excellent accommodations for people interested in experiencing Tortuguero National Park.

Tortuga Lodge Hammock House. The people of Tortuguero are more relaxed than anyplace else in Costa Rica. If you get so laid back at Tortuga Lodge that you fall back, you're welcome to fall into a comfortable hammock.

The Swimming Pool recently added won the International Design Award of Excellence-Silver Medal 2000, chosen by the National Spa & Pool Institute for freeform pool design outside of the U.S. and Canada. Designed to blend into the river environment, the pool features an environmentally friendly purification system that uses an undetectable amount of salt.

All rooms at Tortuga Lodge have as much window area as walls. Indoors and outdoors loose their meaning at the lodge. [top]

Casa MarCasa Mar***

And perhaps you saw Casa Mar featured on TV's "Southern Sportsman," or read about it in the outdoors columns of the daily press. The lodge at Casa Mar is homey and spacious. A well-equipped tackle shop is at one end of the lodge; dinner tables are at the other, and large screened windows offer a view of the jungle lagoon. Each cabin has twin beds with private bathroom and showers. There's ample electricity for your electric shaver or other small travel appliances, hot water, several deep freezes, an ice maker and lights. Drinking water is filtered and pure.

Food is home-cooking style and you'll have all you can eat at every meal. It's good American food with enough local dishes to keep things interesting. Most meals are buffet style. Observatory LodgeObservatory Lodge****

The lodge is located just 1.8 kilometers from the active crater of Arenal Volcano, and is separated from it by a deep river valley. The location was specifically chosen by scientists from the Smithsonian Institute, who needed a close but safe vantage point from which to study the volcano. Seated on 870 acres of land adjacent to the Arenal Volcano National Park, the site contains 270 acres of primary rain forest with well-marked trails, 400 acres of reforestation projects, and 200 acres of working farm lands.

Arenal Observatory Lodge is situated on a ridge 120 meters above Lake Arenal. The ridge rises between the Agua Caliente and Quebrada Danta rivers. This topographical feature is important, so any possible lava flow will not affect the Lodge. It is within ZONE "D" Low Danger Area, near the volcano. Moreover, as prevailing winds are from the East, the lodge would seldom be affected by ash or other fallout from a major eruption, as the lodge is located to the southeast of the volcano.

Meals are served in our large main dining room, which features walls of windows with views of the volcano and Laken Arenal. Our chefs prepare a variety of continental and Costa Rican dishes, with an emphasis on fresh, local fruits and vegetables, as well as locally raised beef, poultry, and fish from Lake Arenal.

We also have a comfortable bar open from 10:00am to 12:00 midnight everyday. This is a wonderful spot to gather with other guests. And of course, it's a good place to be for any volcanic eruptions. The Arenal Observatory Lodge is a modern hotel with many conveniences and a small gift shop stocked with certain necessities. Still, adventure travel in Costa Rica is different than most other forms of tourism and a little foresight and planning will make your trip much more enjoyable.

Smithsonian rooms:
Four Smithsonian rooms are located just off the main lodge and dining area. Each of these rooms feature a king-sized bed, modern private bath, and amazing volcano view through it's over-sized windows. Two of these rooms also feature views of Lake Arenal. Ten Smithsonian rooms are housed in a modern building located about 120 yards from our main lodge, reached via a 134 foot suspension bridge through a small patch of rain forest. These rooms feature huge walls of glass that provide premiere views of the volcano from the comfort of your bed, or from the two chairs strategically placed for you comfort and enjoyment; varnished wood floors, private bathrooms, and one queen- and one full-sized bed. The Smithsonian also features a viewing deck, a conference room and our own volcano museum, with an active seismograph constantly monitoring the volcanic and seismic activity just outside your door.

Standard rooms:
Our nine Standard rooms provide a rustic, yet comfortable base for your volcano viewing and rain forest activities. These rooms were originally designed and used by researchers. Each room features one bunk bed and two full-sized beds, as well as a private bath. These rooms are located just off the main lodge and dining area, and two of them feature direct views of the volcano.

La Casona rooms:
Budget travelers will find four comfortable rooms in La Casona, our original family farmhouse. Three of the rooms here feature queen-sized beds with direct views of the volcano. The fourth room, with it's three bunk beds, is perfect for groups. Located about 500 meters from the main lodge and dining area, La Casona features a large common sitting room with a fireplace, as well as a spacious front porch with volcano view and two full bathrooms for shared use among the guests.

Jr. Suites:
These suites are near the restaurant with a beautiful view to the volcano. They feature 2 king size beds, private bathroom with hot water, ceiling fan, a small fridge with mini-bar, coffee maker, and a terrace with view to the lake and volcano.

ACTIVITIES - Arenal Observatory Lodge isn't just a beautiful spot from which to watch the pyrotechnical wonders of the Arenal Volcano. It's also a great base for a whole wide range of activities and adventures.

The volcano is surrounded by lush rainforest, farms and mountains. The rainforests to the southwest join the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve (a world famous cloud forest visited by thousands of tourists and scientists each year because of its great ecological diversity), and abound with wildlife. Trails through the rain forests as well as long old lava flows are also available. Nearby hot sulfur springs make an interesting visit for a natural sauna.

The 860 acre (347 hectare) farm which surrounds the Observatory gives visitors access to 295 acres of primary and secondary forest, 250 acres planted in Macadamia, and a 185 acre working reforestation project planted in Honduran Pine and Eucalyptus.

Bird watching is excellent here and there is easy walking on the farm roads and trails. Local guides take visitors daily through forest trails to the lava flows and to a nearby waterfall. Longer hikes to Cerro Chato, an extinct volcano whose crater is now a small lake, may be arranged. Horses are available for exploring on horseback.

A popular one-day tour from the Observatory Lodge is to the Caño Negro Reserve. This is a 24,633 acre (9,969 hectare) reserve surrounding a lake which covers about 2000 acres during the rainy season and shrinks to a few pools in the dry season. Caño Negro is a special place for birdwatchers as it is a good place to see the Roseate Spoonbill, Jabiru Stork, Wood Stork and many species of ducks and shore birds.

A swim in the nearby Tabacón Hot Springs or in our new pool with Jacuzzi is a good way to finish the day. [top]

Los LagosLos Lagos****

Los Lagos is one of our favorite hotels. It is a place well suited for families or individuals. In addition to large comfortable cabins with an excellent volcano view the hotel features a spa, cold water and thermal water pools (with slides), Jacuzzi, crocodile farm, fishpond, trails, restaurant, gift shop and a canopy tour. Even on cloudy days when you can't see the volcano there is something for everyone to do at Los Lagos.

The hotel is situated on a large piece of property, some of which is pastureland, located at the base of the Arenal Volcano. Los Lagos is about half way between the town of La Fortuna and the Tabacon Hot Springs. This is one of the best views of the volcano and lava. There is a trail leading to an observation area that takes you just about as close as you can get to the Arenal Volcano. (Or at least as close as you would want to get).

The hotel has a number of Deluxe and Standard rooms as well as two "cabins" with fully equipped kitchens. All rooms have air-conditioning, satellite TV, hot water and private bathrooms, safety boxes, a small fridge and a porch. The premiums have a better view and are a little bigger. They also have a bathtub. Each premium room has 2 double beds while the standards have: either just one double bed, 1 double and a single or 1 double and 2 singles. The equipped cabins are similar to the standard rooms but have 2 bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with 2 singles. [top]

Centro NeotrópicalCentro Neotrópical****

The idea of creating a place for further conservation of nature and eco-development, in combination with sustainable tourism, education and scientific research has become reality with the integrated, holistic inspired Centro Neotropico Sarapiqui.

The complex is located in the lush Sarapiqui Rainforest near the little town of La Virgen de Sarapiqui. Along paved roads, easy accessible and only 85 km from San Jose. And it's also a convenient gateway to other top tourist attractions such as Volcan Poas (1hour), La Paz Waterfalls (45 min), Tortuguero (3.5 hours), Arenal Volcano and Tabacon hot springs (2 hours), Aerial Rainforest Tram (1 hour), La Selva Biological Station (20min), Sarapiqui River Tour (20min). It is a grand gateway to the awe-inspiring rainforest and the realm of the unbound nature of Central America.

A place to relax, to learn, to be challenged physically and mentally in a tropical setting of majestic rainforest and river, with neotropical birds and botanical gardens. A place to glimpse at pre-Columbian history, to experience the mythic rituals of the indigenous people and to enjoy its universal and memorable beauty.

The impact of the visitors on the environment is kept to a minimum. Tourism assures that the local economy is being stimulated without doing harm to the environment or depleting resources. For example at the center we have a special water treatment for the waste water from toilets, showers and kitchen. We also use solar energy to heat the water and a wind turbine will be installed soon to light the terraces and rooms at night.

ECOLODGE
The architecture is inspired by the indigenous pre-Columbian construction techniques of the region, used by natives far more than 1000 years. The round palenques (or ranchos) are covered with a traditional thatched roof of palm leaves. The circular design symbolizes the circle of life - and intricate link between the cycles of the biodiversity within the rainforest.

The Ecolodge consists on four palenque structures, three guests units of eight rooms each, and one central building with lobby, restaurant, bar, coffee gourmet bar, photo gallery, administration, gift shop and conference center.

The three guest units are divided into eight spacious deluxe rooms (24) all of the units are located amidst the lush gardens. Many of the rooms have an outstanding view of the rainforest canopy, while others are nested in the bright and fragrant gardens. Twelve Standard room in the Ulima building complete the Ecolodge capacity of 36 rooms. With harmonious colors decor, guests will enjoy comfortable beds, private bathroom, ceiling fans and cross ventilation system, phone and internet connection. Outside every room a covered terrace invites each guest to enjoy the natural surroundings.

RESTAURANT
Guests may select a delicious meal based on local and vegetarian cuisine. As a unique touch, the restaurant introduces spices as they were once used by the indigenous people in the pre-Columbian time. Our chef will be glad to explain their use and meaning.

THE MUSEUM
The 1000m2 SarapiquiS Museum emphasizes the theme "Man and Nature." It is the largest on-site museum of rainforest ecology and indigenous and prehispanic history in Central America. Audio-visual and animation aspects all play an important role in the museum. Dynamic and contemporary, the museum makes use of state-of-the-art technology and presentation techniques and will remain etched in the minds of the visitors. A film theatre allows to enjoy documentaries of the natural and cultural history of the Neotropics.

BOTANICAL GARDENS
The gardens at the Centro Neotropico SarapiquiS are designed to reflect the richness of the rainforest. The first garden is "Chester's Field Botanical Garden" which holds 400 labeled plants. Here indigenous plants are grouped according to their ornamental, economic or medical use. The garden houses the largest collection of medicinal plants of Costa Rica. Around the main building the gardens are less formal, with emphasis on plants, hummingbirds and butterflies. In the old orange orchard the natural succession of epiphyte, orchids, ferns and other genera demonstrates a lesson in tropical ecology.

RAINFOREST
The Tirimbina Biological Reserve is one of the last remaining stands of mid-elevation, premontane rainforest in northeastern Costa Rica. Teeming with the diversity of botanical and zoological species characteristic of such ecosystems, the rugged Reserve inspires awe in the scientist or visitor. Tirimbina has been the site of numerous biological research projects and serves as a living laboratory for study, as well as an accessible day trip.

An island with lush tropical vegetation lies between Centro Neotrópico SarapiquíS and the Reserve in the middle of the great Sarapiquí River. Varying in size with the volume of water rushing off the Barva volcano watershed, this island offers an easily navigated introduction to tropical forest ecosystems. The river itself is a rich and vital corridor for tropical wildlife.

The gallery forest along the riverbank is a striking display of rainforest plant diversity. A 260m long suspension bridge connects the Centro Neotropico SarapiquiS with the Tirimbina Reserve. 6 km of trails wind through the Reserve for access by researchers and visitors. These trails are designed to approach areas of high interest for wildlife watching or viewing highlights of rainforest biodiversity. Because it is a conservation area, they are designed and maintained for the least possible negative impact on delicate ecosystems.

The greater proportion of the life of a rainforest thrives in the forest canopy. Tirimbina visitors experience a view of the richness of treetop flora and fauna from a 100m suspended canopy walkway spanning one of the many stream valleys in the Reserve.

Tirimbina Rainforest Center is dedicated to field-based education in natural history for adults and children, focused on the global interrelatedness of individual systems and species in the natural world. For this reason we share the Tirimbina Reserve as a place for illumination of some of the mysteries of the rainforest and for experiencing the innate response of humans to wildness and natural beauty.

Under the supervision of a Tirimbina Rainforest Center Education Director, the Centro Neotropico SarapiquíS provides programs to serve resident guests, local or touring day visitors, teachers, students for day or extended visits, special interest adult groups, and volunteer naturalists and guides.

ARCHEOLOGY
The archeological Park "Alma Ata" is the first park of its kind in Costa Rica. The Park is set in the orange orchard of the Centro Neotropico SarapiquiS and has been developed in coordination with the National Museum of Costa Rica. Scientific information is provided all along the trails in the park. A fascinating night tour with guide is schedule on daily basis. Two very skilled Costa Rican archaeologists did the excavation of tombs and the reconstruction of the 15th century village. [top]

Monteverde LodgeMonteverde Lodge****

Located in the Tilarán Mountain Range at 4,600 ft. above sea level on the edge of the world's best known mid-elevation cloud forest, Monteverde Lodge is the expression of Costa Rica Expeditions' desire to create the ultimate lodging experience for the discerning nature traveler.

The dining room with its cloud forest mural, abundant tropical flora, and contemporary design is the perfect setting for enjoying a unique a la carte cuisine lovingly created especially for Monteverde by Hugo "Perla" Salas, the person responsible for the meals at all our lodges.

The rooms at the Lodge are designed to put you "in the forest" while protecting you from the mist and strong wind so characteristic of the area. All are spacious with solar heated hot water private baths.

Many of our guests find that their most enjoyable time in Costa Rica is spent in the Monteverde Lodge Gardens. Emphasizing ferns and bromeliads, we have chosen native plant species that replicate the natural cloud forest and attract its fauna. A running stream, pond and small waterfall provide a habitat for reverie birds and a host of reptiles and amphibians. Carefully placed benches provide a comfortable place, offer privacy and/or panoramic vistas to observe the wildlife, read, write, or just wile away the hours.

Originally just 4,000 acres, the Monteverde Reserve now protects an area of approximately 25,000 acres, comprising six different life zones. So many habitats in such a small area along with extensive trail improvements allow visitors to enjoy a rich diversity of flora and fauna with relatively little and easy walking.

The Children's Eternal Rain Forest, which was purchased by the donations of literally tens of thousands of children from 44 countries all over the world, is adjacent to the Monteverde Preserve and operated by the Monteverde Conservation League.

Nearby, the newer Santa Elena Reserve provides a less developed but increasingly popular cloud forest experience. Over 2,000 plant species are native to Monteverde, including a host of wild orchids. Also, more than 400 species of birds and 100 species of mammals have been observed. The area's natural diversity provides an enchanting backdrop which adds to the magic of relaxing at Monteverde Lodge. [top]
