Packing list:
Bring a few pairs of quick drying shorts, light pans, T-shirts that are easy to dry and your bathing suit. Shirts can be short sleeved and long sleeved for protection against the sun and bugs. In general, you will normally be comfortable in shorts and T-shirts during the day, and long pants and a shirt at night. We also recommend bringing a copy of your passport, camera, binoculars, sunscreen, mosquito repellant, a small towel, hat, sandals with ankle straps, hiking tennis shoes, a strap to secure your glasses, a rain coat for rainy days and a long sleeved sweater for higher elevations.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1 ≈ Welcome to Costa Rica [top]
We will be waiting for you at the Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose, Costa Rica (SJO). After you arrive and meet your Costa Rica Adventures guides, we begin your adventure to the mountain lodge, Cerro Alto, on top of mountain in Turrialba valley. It will be about a 2 ½ hour ride through small towns, beautiful coffee farms, and sugar cane fields around the mountains. We will stop for lunch or dinner on the way to the lodge. When we arrive to the lodge you will enjoy the comfortable accommodations with a wonderful view of the Turrialba valley and Turrialba Volcano. We will have a delicious Costa Rican meal served at the panoramic restaurant.
Day 2 ≈ Lower Pacuare River [top]
Today you will enjoy a delicious and authentic Costa Rican breakfast in our panoramic restaurant on top of the mountain. After breakfast we are preparing for our river journey to the Pacuare River. On the way to the river we will visit the Serpentarium. The Serpentarium is a center for snake research and education in Costa Rica. Here we will listen to brief talk on tropical snake identification and learn about other reptile species.
We continue on the way to the Pacuare River that has been recognized as one of the top five most beautiful rivers around the world in the National Geographic magazine. Today we will have an 18 mile river descent on the Lower Pacuare River. The rapids are very fun and exciting as we get splashed with the warm, clear water of this rainforest river. You will see plenty of exotic birds and wildlife along this section. We will have about 8 miles to warm up in class II/III then we will do a short hike to one of the many waterfalls that feeds the Pacuare River. Here you can take pleasure in swimming, bird watching and the amazing jungle scenery of this tropical paradise.
After this hike, we will enter Huacas canyon where there will be 3 class IV rapids. The river then opens up to class III whitewater for about 5 miles until Simarrones, a class IV drop. Lunch is prepared riverside by your guides. After lunch we will continue our river descent in class II/III rapids with many play spots to enjoy the nice, warm water before we get to the take out. After paddling, we will return to the lodge to relax and enjoy a delicious dinner.
Day 3 ≈ Reventazón River- Pascua section [top]
After a healthy breakfast in our panoramic restaurant, we begin preparing for one of the most exciting trips of Costa Rica whitewater. There are 12 miles on this section with 14 class IV and many class III rapids. You will see many exotic birds and beautiful vegetation in this jungle canyon and enjoy the amazing whitewater of Costa Rica. There are many play spots to spend the day having lots of fun! You will have a river lunch on the way down prepared by your guides. After paddling, we will take you for a city tour in Turrialba. You can go sightseeing in town for a few hours and then, we will return to the lodge to relax and enjoy the beautiful view of Turrialba Valley. This evening you will enjoy a delicious dinner at the panoramic lodge restaurant.
Day 4 ≈ Upper Pacuare [top]
The Upper Pacuare is the most difficult section of Pacuare River. This trip will be a 9 mile river descent in class III, IV/V rapids. There are many technical rapids with steep drops in this jungle canyon. Hydraulic Blood, Entrance to Bobo and the Bobo Fall are the major class V rapids on this section. You can walk around them in case you feel unsure about these rapids. The rest of the section is class III/IV rapids with incredible jungle scenery, wildlife, and clear warm water that makes this river a paradise. After paddling this section, we will come back to our office in Turrialba. Tonight we will enjoy a delicious dinner to celebrate the end of our fantastic trip.
