Packing list:

Bring a few pairs of quick drying shorts, light pants, T-shirts that are easy to dry and your bathing suit. Shirts can be short sleeved and long sleeved for protection against the sun and bugs. In general, you will normally be comfortable in shorts and T-shirts during the day, and long pants and a shirt at night. We recommend bringing a rain coat for rainy days and a long sleeved sweater for higher elevations. We also recommend bringing a copy of your passport, camera, binoculars, sunscreen, mosquito repellant, a small towel, hat, sandals with ankle straps, hiking tennis shoes and a strap to secure your glasses. If you are an experienced bike rider, we invite you to bring your own cycling shoes and pedals. We can install your pedals on our mountain bikes for an even better ride!

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 ≈ Welcome to Costa Rica [top]

We will be waiting for you at the Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose, Costa Rica (SJO). After you arrive and meet your Costa Rica Adventures guides, we begin your whitewater kayaking vacation to Turrialba valley for your lodging destination at the Hotel Interamericano. turrialba

The hotel is known for its cleanliness, security and friendly atmosphere. It is centrally located and within walking distance to restaurants, movie, etc. There are good beds and firm mattresses throughout and hot Showers for your comfort.

It will be about a 2 ½ hour ride through small towns, beautiful coffee farms, and sugar cane fields around the mountains. We will stop for lunch or dinner on the way to the hotel. When we arrive to the hotel you will enjoy the comfortable accommodations with a bar service, a large living room and a balcony to sit back and relax. We will have a delicious Costa Rican meal served at a local restaurant before you end the evening.

Day 2 ≈ Upper section of the Pejivalle River Taus [top]

Today you will enjoy a typical Costa Rican breakfast (Gallo Pinto) at the hotel's restaurant. After breakfast we will outfit you with all necessary equipment to start our first paddling day.Pejivalle Today we’re going to do some class III/IV rapids on the Upper section of the Pejivalle River.

This trip will be 10 miles long with spectacular jungle scenery all the way down. Our kayaking trip will start with 3 class IV drops. Lunch is prepared, riverside, by your guides. This will be a perfect river descent to warm up for the upcoming week.

After paddling, we will take you for a city tour in Turrialba on our mountain bikes to go sightseeing in town for a few hours. We will then enjoy a nice dinner at a local restaurant in Turrialba town.

Tonight you will rest and relax before you end the evening at Turrialtico Mountain Lodge on top of mountain in Turrialba. When we arrive to the lodge you will enjoy the comfortable accommodations with a wonderful view of the valley and Angostura Lake. 

Day 3 ≈ Lower section of the Pacuare River [top] huacas_waterfall

After a delicious breakfast, we will prepare for our river journey to the Lower section of Pacuare River. We will outfit you with all necessary equipment to start our first paddling day.

We continue on the way to the Pacuare River, which has been recognized as one of the top five most beautiful rivers around the world in the National Geographic magazine.

The trip starts at eight hundred meters above the sea level and finishes at forty meters. We will start our kayaking trip river and enjoy a wonderful morning along the Pacuare River, observing and listening to the many species of birds and wildlife.

After some great jungle hikes and wonderful rapids, our kayaking tour continues down the most challenging sections of the Pacuare River with 3 class IV drops. This spectacular river canyon and virgin rainforest is breathtaking, creating one unforgettable experience. You will enjoy the amazing views of this tropical paradise. Lunch is prepared, riverside, by your guides.

There will be many opportunities for swimming or relaxing next to the river. swimmingAfter lunch we will continue our river descent in class II/III rapids with many play spots to enjoy the nice, warm water before we get to the take out. There is a restaurant, a bar, showers and changing rooms at the take out.

Later this afternoon we will go back to Turrialba valley. We will be lodging a Cerro Alto Lodge on top of mountain in Turrialba valley. When we arrive to the lodge you will enjoy the comfortable accommodations with a wonderful view of the valley, Angostura Lake and Turrialba Volcano. You will have a delicious Costa Rican meal served at the panoramic restaurant.

Day 4 ≈ Reventazón River Super Pascua section [top]super_pascua

After a healthy breakfast at the panoramic restaurant, we will prepare for our river journey to the Reventazón River.Today we will be kayaking the Super Pascua section near the town of Peralta.

This section is really fun and has continuous big water with class III+, IV & IV+ rapids. We will be running part of the Peralta section with nice jungle scenery, wildlife, warm water and exciting big water rapids. We will stop in every play spot to surf and have lots of fun! This river descent will be 8 miles long, which has been recognized as one of the most exciting trips of Costa Rica whitewater. kayaking reventazonLunch is prepared, riverside by your guides. After our paddling trip we will make a stop to get a cold drink at Linda Vista restaurant with a wonderful view of the Reventazon River.

Late this afternoon we will return to the mountain lodge to rest and relax for the rest of the evening.

Dinner will be served at the hotel's restaurant.

Day 5 ≈ Upper, Upper Pacuare and Upper section

The day begins with a healthy breakfast to get ready for our kayaking adventure on the Upper section of Pacuare River.river put in After breakfast we continue to the beautiful Pacuare River, which leads you through scenic tropical jungle.

We will travel about 1 ½ hours to the Pacuare River canyon. There will be plenty of local birds, butterflies and wildlife to see along the way.

This section starts with nice, calm class II/III warm whitewater rapids and gets a little more difficult as we continue down in this rainforest river.

We will be doing 18 miles down river. kayaking upper pacuareThe rapids are very fun and exciting. There are nice play spots along the way and two class IV rapids for the first half. Lunch is prepared, riverside, by your guides at the end of the Upper, Upper section. After lunch our trip continues down the most difficult section of the Pacuare River with 8 class IV drops, 3 class V and many class III rapids. This spectacular river canyon and virgin rainforest is breathtaking, creating one unforgettable experience.

After paddling, we will return to the mountain lodge to take a shower and get ready to enjoy a BBQ party at our office in Turrialba.

Day 6 ≈ Reventazón River Pascua and Florida section [top]

This morning you will sleep in, then after a healthy breakfast at the panoramic restaurant, we will prepare for our paddling trip to the Reventazón River. reventazon

This kayaking trip will be a 14 mile river descent on world class rapids III+ & IV+ on the Reventazón River. The Pascua section of the Reventazón River has the most exciting big whitewater in Costa Rica. There are 14 class IV+ big whitewater rapids on this section. The Reventazón River is the number one in the country with the largest rapids. This kayaking descent will be about 4 hours, which includes a river lunch. There is a lot of jungle scenery and wildlife that you will enjoy on this trip.

There is a restaurant, a bar, showers and changing rooms at the take out. After paddling, we will travel north east to the town of Sarapiqui. We will enjoy a delicious dinner at a local restaurant after we arrive to our lodging destination at Tia Rosita cabins.

Day 7 ≈ Serpentarium (Exotic reptiles), Middle section of the Toro River & Hot Springs [top]Toro_River_whitewater_Tour

This morning we will travel north to La Fortuna town home of the Arenal Volcano. On the way to the Toro River we will visit the Serpentarium. The Serpentarium is a center for snake research and education in Costa Rica. Here we will listen to a brief talk on tropical snake identification and learn about other reptiles species.

The Toro River is a 17 mile river descent. This section is really fun and has continuous class III & IV rapids. The middle section of the Toro River is like any other river in Costa Rica with nice jungle scenery, wildlife, warm water and exciting rapids. Arenal_VolcanoWe will stop in every play spot and have lots of fun! We will have a river lunch prepared by your guides.

After paddling, we will check in at La Pradera hotel in La Fortuna. We will then enjoy a delicious dinner before visiting the Hot Springs. It is here where we will and spend the evening soaking, relaxing and having fun in this beautiful place. Tonight we will celebrate our fantastic trip together during your last night in Costa Rica.

Day 8 ≈ Zarcero & San José Juan Santamaria International Airport, Drop off and Departure  [top]Zarcero_Park

We enjoy a healthy breakfast before traveling back to the Central Valley to enjoy one of the most beautiful drives on the country. Along the way to the Central Valley, we will stop in the town of Zarcero for sightseeing at the famous local park. We continue our journey to the Central valley in Alajuela and San José. We then transfer to the airport to say our good-byes! (SJO) Drop off.
